Eyewitness in New Orleans
Fringe Santa Cruz filmmaker ALEKZ LONDOS, known for his punk-fueled street video "PSYCHOSiiS," is back from a hair-raising experience in New Orleans, saying in all earnestness that his life will never be the same.
On impulse, Londos drove four days from Santa Cruz to the Katrina-ravaged regions of Louisiana and Mississippi with donated food, water and supplies in a 1991 Ford Bronco that, he said, had no air conditioning and no way to roll down the windows.
"I was in Santa Cruz and everybody was saying, ‘I wish there was something we could do,’ or some people couldn’t even watch the news because it was so upsetting," said Londos, calling from his cell phone on the way back to California. "I just couldn’t sleep or do much of anything. So I just went."
Londos spent days in a surreal city in a part of the country he’d never been to before, watching people in the throes of extreme suffering. "I saw bodies under bridges, bodies on overpasses, crashed cars piled up, dead animals everywhere. It was more intense and horrifying than anything I’ve ever experienced in my life.
"It was nothing like it was on the news. There’s nothing closer to a dream that you would ever experience."
